The Church of St Silvestro
The Church of St Silvestro was founded between the end of the
Eleventh century and the start of the Twelfth century. It was initially
realised with an only nave which ended with an apse but then, in 1331,
it was expanded and a left nave was added. During time, it has been
renovated several times: the inside is in a Romanesque style, in fact it
was originally covered in frescos, lost during the numerous renovations
and the bombardments of the Second World War.
On the right wall of the presbytery, some frescos, dating back to the
following centuries, are still visible today. They illustrate St Sebastian
and, St Lorenzo and St Antonio Abate. There is also a Virgin with the
Child. On the inside of the presbytery there is a triptych illustrating the
Deposition of Christ inside the Sepulchre.
A rock staircase leads to the crypt, located under the presbytery, with
its marvellous cross vault that dates back to a period far previous to the
construction of the Church. Inside the crypt the most ancient fresco of
Alatri, dating back to primitive archaism, can be admired.
